The coin is legal tender in the US and was struck to proof quality at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse features a woman playing tennis. She is pictured with the Olympic rings as she swings her racket toward the ball. This was designed by James C. The reverse of the coin was designed by Thomas D.

Rogers and shows the Olympic Torch. Inscriptions included "Atlanta 1996" and Centennial Olympic Games. The die features the same design as this coin's reverse.

Much of the design is evident as the die has been cancelled with an "X" or cross. It is unusual for die to have much of the design evident on the die, often the entire design is obscured or removed.
