A lot of sellers do not sell authentic 1981 Type 2 Proof Sets.. The primary coin is the Susan B. All these coins have nicely frosted devices.. The SBA is also Toned, adding to it's value..
"The Type 1 mintmark on 1981 coins is actually the Type 2 "Clear" S mintmark that debuted in late 1979, replacing the 1979 Type 1 "Filled S mintmark. The most notable difference between the 1981 Type 1 mintmark and 1981 Type 2 mintmark is best perceived in the serifs of the S mintmark, which on the 1981 Type 2 iteration of the S appear bulbous.
The presence of the serifs is indeed the best, and certainly most outward, diagnostic of this scarcer mintmark variety. MOST SELLERS CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE AND ARE UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT A CLEAR "S" MINT MARK DEFINES A TYPE 2 SET. A CLEAR MINT MARK DOES NOT DEFINE A TYPE 2. ALL "S" MINT MARKS FOR 1981 PROOF SETS ARE CLEAR. SELLERS ARE CONFUSING THE 1981 SET WITH THE 1979 PROOF SET WHERE A CLEAR MINT MARK DOES DEFINE THE TYPE 2 1979 SET.THE 1981 SET IS VERY DIFFICULT TO DISTINGUISH AND MOST COIN DEALERS CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE. GOOGLE 1981-S TYPE 2 PROOF SET AND STUDYING THE "S" MINTMARK PHOTOS PROVIDED. THE COMMON 1981'S' HAS THE TOP TIP OF THE'S' POINTING DOWN SOMEWHAT WHEREAS THE TYPE 2 "S" HAS MORE OF A BLOB ON THE TIP, A FLATTER TOP ALMOST TILTED BACK BY COMPARISON TO THE TYPE 1 AND NEARLY ALL TYPE 2 MINT MARKS ARE "FROSTED". A TYPE 2 SET IS DEFINED AS THE SUSAN B. ANTHONY DOLLAR AS HAVING A TYPE 2 "S" MINT MARK.
